The 2026 Junior season was a triumph for Jan Kriel School's tug-of-war teams, who participated in the SA Championships in Robertson.

With 20 high school learners and 19 primary school learners participating, the teams showed their determination and talent on the ropes. The Barefoot team, who were participating in the championship for the first time, stood their ground against the more experienced schools. The Boot team confirmed their place among the country's top teams with strong performances in various weight divisions.

Results highlights:

  • Barefoot: 320kg – 4th, 280kg – 5th, 360kg – 5th.

  • Boots: 600kg A – 2nd, and overall 2nd place (silver). 560kg A – 2nd and overall 2nd place (silver) , 480kg – 4th.

Our learners have reached new heights. They have not only competed, but surpassed their personal goals. We are incredibly proud.

The teachers involved in tug of war play an incredibly important role in each learner's well-being and personal growth. They are as follows:

· Nina Meyer - Head Barefoot Coach

· Lindie Francois - Barefoot Coach

· Charlene van Schalkwyk - Head Boot Coach

· Ryno vd Watt - Boot trainer

· El-Rey vd Watt - Boot trainer

· André vd Spuy - Boot coach

We could not have made the season such a great success without the input of the following outside coaches. They are:

· Leonard Bisogno - SAJTU Referee and Barefoot Coach

· Emily Bisogno - Former Jan Krieler, SAJTU referee and Barefoot coach

· Piet Lourens - Kuilsrivier Tug of War Club chairman, TWIF Referee, SA coach and Boot coach

· Diana Landman - Kuilsrivier and SAJTU official, SA-Toutrekker, Boot Coach.

The success of the tour was largely due to the learners and parents who faithfully showed up for practices and made the hard work possible. The generous support of sponsors – including the Jan Kriel Institute , Engen Truckstop , Spinnaker Software , and Landi Butterworth of Mavs Property – further facilitated the ability to bring together such a large group of learners and staff and make the season a remarkable achievement.

With the energy and dedication that characterized this season, the tug-of-war family looks forward with great excitement to what the next season will bring.
