Dr Mariette van Niekerk is the Head Psychologist for the Inclusive Education team, which supports learners in mainstream schools. Learners identified for additional support start their application process at the mainstream school where the learner is currently placed and follow the WCED SIAS process. SIAS documents and supporting documentation (e.g. reports from educators, therapists, psychologists, medics and other professional role players) are attached, submitted directly to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and managed by them. No applications can be made directly to the school. If the placement committee recommends that a candidate be approved for placement at an LSEN school, and there is a suitable place available at Jan Kriel School, arrangements are made for admission. If there is no place available for the learner, the learner is referred back to the District Psychologist and Support Team for support in the child's current school.
The Inclusive Education Team of Jan Kriel School supports the learners in Metropole East who were not placed. Learners who are in special schools in other provinces that offer the same academic program as Jan Kriel School and whose parents are moving to Cape Town, must make an interprovincial transfer and address it to the Director of Inclusive Education and Support.
