On Saturday, 5 September 2026, Jan Kriel School in Kuilsriver once again welcomed a record amount of participants to its annual Tekkie Challenge, proudly sponsored by Food Lover’s Market. Over 3300 runners and walkers came together to support learners with special education needs by taking part in the 16km, 10km or family-friendly 5km events.

Food Lover’s Market’s commitment to supporting local communities helps ensure that every step taken makes a real difference. This year’s event also welcomed VetsMart as a partner for the first time, welcoming dogs on the 5km fun run/walk.

“At Food Lover’s Market, we believe that meaningful partnerships have the power to change lives,” says Bianca Nel, Marketing Manager at Food Lover’s Market. “The Jan Kriel Tekkie Challenge is one of those special events where every entry, every kilometre and every person taking part contributes to something much bigger."

"On behalf of Jan Kriel, I cannot thank everyone enough for making this annual event such a huge success. Our sponsors, Food Lovers Market and VetsMart—without whose support the Tekkie Challenge could not take place. The participants who turn up year after year, bringing along their friends and plenty of spirit. The surrounding Kuils River community, who cheerfully put up with any inconvenience. The City of Cape Town’s traffic services, Netcare 911 for medical care, and the Cape Multisport Club officials who keep our participants safe on the routes. Thank you, everyone! Jan Kriel appreciates you! See you next year!" - Ds. André van Wyk, Managing Director.

Funds raised through the Tekkie Challenge are used to help develop sports at Jan Kriel School through the upgrading of facilities and the purchase of equipment, including those required for children participating in sports for the disabled.
