Welcome to Jan Kriel School

Jan Kriel School offers tuition to learners from the foundation phase up to Grade 12. The curriculum is offered according to the National Revised Curriculum Statement, the same as that of mainstream schools. At the end of Grade 12 learners will write the National Senior Certificate Examination of the Department of Basic Education.

Learners who benefit most from placement at Jan Kriel School are learners who, despite adequate cognitive abilities as to comprehension, reasoning, abstract thinking, verbal expression and retention, experience barriers to development and learning.

Our Story

This centre of excellence for the teaching of learners with special educational needs had a very humble origin. Founded out of love for their son, Jan Kriel, Reverent and Mrs Kriel established the Jan Kriel Home for children living with epilepsy. The school was officially opened on 4 May 1937, as accredited by the then Union Education Department, and 7 learners grew to almost 40 by 1939. In 1942 the Dutch Reformed Church took over the management of the institution and the cooperation between the Department of Education and the Jan Kriel Institute, as it is known today, is born.

The first principal was appointed in 1942, residential units and classrooms were added and by 1965 more that 100 learners were supported. In 1972 learners with other learning disabilities were included and the school building, as we know it today, was inaugurated in 1985. Almost 90 years since officially opening it's doors, Jan Kriel School supports more than 550 learners with various barriers to learning including specific learning disabilities, visual or auditory sensory impairments, certain medical conditions and physical disabilities.

They complete the SIAS documents and attach all available documentation (e.g., reports from educators, therapists, psychologists, physicians and other professional role players). Thereafter, the application for admission to Jan Kriel School is directed to and managed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).
