What makes Jan Kriel different?
Classes are significantly smaller compared to mainstream education. Teaching techniques are adapted to meet the special educational needs of learners.
We strive to promote the scholastic progress of learners, restore their confidence and self-esteem and equip them with the necessary skills for reintegration into mainstream education, if possible.
Teamwork is an important aspect of the services that are rendered at the school. The involvement and cooperation between members of the team (educators, support staff, parents and learners) is essential to ensure that every learner’s barriers to learning is acknowledged and optimally addressed.
An extensive support team is available to address and support the physical, social, emotional and academic needs. The team facilitates and supports the development of learners and promotes the accommodation of the learner in the school and curriculum.
The support team included members of the following professions:
• Educational Psychologist • Counsellor • Social Worker
• Professional Nurses • Occupational Therapists • Physiotherapists
• Speech language and Hearing Therapists • Learning support teacher
The school has learning laboratories in both the primary and high school that focus on the management and coordination of learning support and assessment accommodations in the school.
Jan Kriel School is a resource centre where the staff share their knowledge, skills and experience with parents, learners and educators of other special schools and mainstream schools who accommodate learners with barriers to learning.

Sport at Jan Kriel
At Jan Kriel School, we provide a wide range of sports. Our primary aim is to introduce our learners to various sports while fostering a sense of belonging. We encourage all students to participate, regardless of their fears or limitations. The sports field is the place where a poor self-image can be restored and where the importance of practicing sport is cemented. It promotes character development, socialization and teamwork.
In Foundation Phase learners take part in ball games, soccer, cricket or rugby. Intermediate & Senior Phase learners can choose from the following:

The Governing Body is the committee which, in cooperation with the principal, ensures that the school complies with the requirements according to the applicable legal rules and the provisions of the constitution. It creates a healthy climate wherein the school can be managed with the necessary oversight.

The prefects assist to promote good discipline in the classroom and on the school grounds. They also work closely with the class educators to discuss learner matters and facilities.

The RCL develops and promotes a positive learner spirit and culture within the school and focuses on good discipline as well as positive communication with educators and school management through regular learner meetings and discussions.
